General Description

Sustainable production of biofuels from lignocellulosic raw materials in the system of distributed generation of energy carriers from renewable sources is becoming an integral element of bioeconomy and circular economy development. At the same time, it is a research challenge regarding both technical and technological aspects, as well as socio-economic and environmental ones. The monograph synthesizes the current state of research on raw material sources and technologies for the production of lignocellulosic biofuels against the background of market, environmental and social conditions and indicates new research areas. Lignocellulosic biomass is an unlimited natural resource of the Earth; it can be obtained from primary sources, residues from agricultural and forestry production, agri-food processing and post-consumer sources. In the context of sustainable development, the biorefinery processing of lignocellulosic raw materials for biofuels and the energy management of all residues are of particular importance. The following chapters of the monograph present the issues of the biofuels market, environmental impacts and formal and legal regulations. Fuel generations were characterized (Chapter 1), and then solid (Chapter 2), liquid (Chapter 4) and gaseous (Chapter 5) biofuels in the process aspect (Chapter 3), the use of biofuels in engines and fuel cells (Chapter 6) and sustainable development of the biofuels market (Chapter 7). The monograph concludes that the design of processes for the conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to biofuels should take into account the restoration of the natural environment by closing the circulation of matter and energy, and in the material and energy balances - the analysis of the effects of trade-offs in the field of three pillars of sustainable development: environmental, economic and social.
