How does the nitrogen cracker work?

With the nitrogen cracker Gazoo you reduce the nitrogen in 2 steps. First, the ammonia is withdrawn from the thin fraction. This is done through evaporation and the application of a base or heat. During the evaporation process, 2 products are created: ammonia and residual water.

You can drive the residual water over the land or pump it back to the barn. When pumping back to the barn, the residual water must be sprayed over the slats. This will clean the smeared surface of the grids.

By spraying the residual water over the slats, we ensure a reduction of ammonia emissions from the barn (reduction of 62% with a slatted floor compared to a traditional dairy barn, with a solid floor, a reduction of 63% is achieved).

In the second part of the processing process, the ammonia (gaseous form) released during the evaporation process is collected in the nitrogen cracker and processed. Adding an acid (nitric acid, sulfuric acid or an organic acid for organic fertilizer) creates a liquid fertilizer called Biogrow. Depending on the acid used, Biogrow contains at least 15% nitrogen. The pH is around 6.

Methane reduction

Methane is 23 times more potent as a greenhouse gas than CO2. Converting methane to CO2 results in a methane reduction that is made possible by the nitrogen cracker.

Methane is produced in the organic part of (slurry) manure. By separating the manure and cracking the nitrogen, residual water is created. By pumping back and spraying the residual water over the floor surface, we reduce the amount of organic fertilizer in the pit. This reduces the methane emissions in the barn.

When separating the manure, a thick and a thin fraction are created. When the solid fraction is collected in a covered space, it is possible to capture the methane that is released as a greenhouse gas and direct it towards the Gazoo.
